St. Modwen Homes crew set to paddle to victory at Mumbles Raft Race

31 July 2018

Meet the Grey Panther – the handbuilt raft charged with taking a crew from St. Modwen Home’s Hendrefoilan Park development in Sketty to victory in this year’s legendary Mumbles Raft Race.

The vessel boasts a wooden house shape complete with roof, chimney and St. Modwen Homes flag, and is supported by six 125 litre barrels that will cut through the high seas.

It has been built by Gordon Woosnam, a telehandler driver at Hendrefoilan Park who will also be skipper. His fellow paddlers are Hendrefoilan Park Site Manager Phil Morgan, Assistant Site Manager Joe Davies, Trainee Site Manager Callum Roberts and gateman Richard Morgan.

The exciting race begins at 12.30pm on Sunday 5th August and is expected to raise more than £15,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). For the first time in 30 years, it will follow a new ‘out and back’ race course from Knab Rock around a halfway marker and back to the slipway near to Verdi’s.

The St. Modwen Homes team will be battling it out against tens of other rafts, and Gordon is confident of success.

He said: "I have never built a raft before but I am very proud of the Grey Panther - especially as I have only spent half of my budget on materials! St. Modwen Homes was recently named a five star house builder by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) and this is a five star raft. I have very high hopes for a crossing the finish line first on the day, as well as having a lot of fun!

"More seriously it will be great to help raise important funds for the RNLI lifeboat volunteers, who do amazing work helping save lives at sea."

Currently a range of three and four bedroom homes are available at Hendrefoilan Park with prices starting from just £190,000.

Homebuyers can visit the on-site marketing suite, off Gower Road, which is open between 10am and 5.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 12pm until 7.30pm on Thursday. Appointments can be made by calling 0844 243 4540.
