Around 200 pupils at Hermitage Primary School in Uxbridge swapped their pens and pencils for hard hats and hi-vis jackets as part of a special construction-themed assembly from St. Modwen Homes.
Martin Gaffney, Site Manager at St. Modwen Homes’ nearby St. Andrew’s Park development, was joined by Considerate Constructors’ Mascot, Honor Goodsite, to deliver the lesson. Children got the chance to dress up in the same protective clothing that staff wear on site and were taught about the dangers and hazards of construction sites as well as enormous range of jobs that the industry offers. Martin and Honor also challenged the pupils to design a construction-themed poster, with the most creative entries set to be showcased on the hoarding at St. Andrew’s Park.
Deputy Headteacher at Hermitage Primary School, Parmjit Varaitch, said: “The lesson delivered by St. Modwen Homes was a fantastic insight into construction. Along with the serious message about the risks of playing near construction sites, the children really enjoyed finding out about the huge amount of work that goes into building homes, as well as the many different jobs that people do. I’m sure that some of them will consider a career in construction in the future.” Martin Gaffney added: “Building sites, like the one at St. Andrew’s Park, are full of different dangers at all times, even for fully trained staff, so it is imperative that we get out to schools to teach pupils about this.
“Our visit also aims to inspire boys and girls to consider a career in construction when they grow up. The industry has exciting careers for people of all skill sets – ranging from planning and design to building and sales and marketing.”
St. Modwen Homes voluntarily abides by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which is designed to encourage best practice at construction sites to keep staff and visitors to the development safe, limit the impact of construction on the environment and respect the local community.
