Durham

Durham is a historic city in North East England characterised by its riverside setting and winding cobbled streets. The 11th-century Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle form a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands prominently over the city. With bustling shopping areas, waterside bars and restaurants, and a busy calendar of cultural events, the city is becoming a popular choice for families and young professionals alike.

The River Wear flows around Durham city centre, providing paths for walks and hosting the annual Durham Regatta, one of England’s oldest boat races. For more green space, the Durham University Botanic Garden contains ten hectares of woodland and tropical glasshouses. The city also hosts the Durham Miners' Gala, an annual celebration of the region's heritage.

Residents have access to shopping and leisure destinations, including the high street stores at Prince Bishops Place and the cinema and restaurants at The Riverwalk. The Arnison Centre on the outskirts of the city provides large supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and a Marks & Spencer Foodhall.

The city has excellent transport links. Durham Railway Station offers direct trains to London Kings Cross in under three hours, along with regular services to Edinburgh, Newcastle and York. Local bus routes operate from Durham Bus Station, providing frequent services to surrounding towns such as Bishop Auckland, Hartlepool and Consett. The A1(M) runs close to the city, providing a direct route north and south by car. Newcastle International Airport is a 30-minute drive away, offering domestic and international flights.

Families have a choice of several schools in the area. Primary schools such as Blue Coat CofE Junior School and St Godric’s Catholic Primary School have received 'Good' ratings from Ofsted. For secondary education, Durham Johnston Comprehensive School and Belmont Community School are local options, while Durham Sixth Form Centre provides further education in the city centre.
